About Janet Fryer

Janet has always been a maker.

From sewing clothes to painting and working with clay, her hands have always been her tools. Practical by nature, she has been making things since childhood.

Journey

Art school wasn’t to be. Instead, Janet trained as a hairdresser, later continuing her education with Vidal Sassoon, whose approach to cutting and sculpting hair was an art form in itself.

Then came marriage, three daughters and a life that took her and her family across many miles and oceans before they eventually settled in California.

It was there that Janet met an artist who invited her to come and make art.

She did. And she was hooked.

Making

Painting led to mixed media, wood carving and ceramics. One interest led to another, and Janet has never felt much need to choose between them.

Now in her seventies, she still approaches each day with the same curiosity. She might begin with a painting of a tree, turn her attention to a ceramic face, or find herself making something entirely unexpected.

She doesn’t believe everything needs to fit into a particular style or category. For Janet, the pleasure is in making, experimenting and seeing what happens.

Philosophy

Her philosophy is simple:

Perfectly imperfect.

“May all I ever produce look like a human created it.”

Whatever it is.
